The boiler heat exchanger steel tube expander is a high-pressure hydraulic steel tube expanding machine, which can output hydraulic power up to 500MPa. It can achieve both light expansion joint and strength expansion joint of tube to tube-sheet, thereby eliminating the gap between the tube and the tube-sheet, thus preventing tube loosening. The hydraulic tube expander can efficiently expand stainless steel tube for diverse shell-and-tube heat exchangers such as boilers, condensers, heaters, chillers and more.

Heat Exchanger Tube Expander Working Principle

The stainless steel tube expanding machine consists of two parts: hydraulic console and expansion rob. It uses water as the tube expansion medium. Just preset the tube expansion pressure and expansion duration on the touch screen, and the tube expanding machine will automatically complete the tube expansion under the PLC automatic control. First of all, the built-in electric hydraulic power unit of the machine will pressurize the water to your required pressure, and inject the high-pressure water into the expansion rob. Under the action of high pressure, the rubber jacket of the expansion rob will apply uniform hydraulic pressure to the inner surface of the tube, causing the tube to plastically deform, thereby completing the expansion joint between the tube and the tube-sheet. The steel tube expander is equipped with the integrated rubber expansion rod, which is composed of high-strength alloy steel core and elastic rubber. The expansion rod uses the radial pressure generated by hydraulic pressure acting on the elastic rubber to expand the tube. Our expansion rod adopts the one-piece design, which won’t damage the inner wall of tubes, and adopts the rubber jacket structure with pressure resistance of up to 500MPa. Therefore, the expansion rod has better expansion effect, higher expansion efficiency and longer service life.

What is the difference between hydraulic expansion tube and mechanical expansion tube?

Mechanical tube expansion method uses balls to expand the tube, which is a lossy tube expansion and the tube wall will become thinner. Hydraulic expansion tube is also called water pressure expansion. It is a damage-free tube expansion that does not damage the tube wall and does not affect subsequent welding.

For shell and tube heat exchangers, there are two types of expansion joint between tube sheet and tube: Light expansion tube and Strength expansion tube.
Light expansion tube is to eliminate the gap between tube and tube-sheet, and does not bear the pulling force. Thereby, it does not require grooving in the tube sheet holes.
Strength expansion is to ensure the sealing performance and pull-off strength of the connection between tube and tube-sheet. It is necessary to reserve grooves in the tube sheet holes and requires higher pressure to achieve tube expansion.

The design service life of the expansion rod is 120 to 150 times. The actual service life is affected by multiple factors, such as tube expansion method (light tube expansion or strength tube expansion), expansion pressure, worker proficiency, etc.

The tube expansion pressure and tube expansion duration are set on the touch screen of the machine.

When the expansion rob rubber jacket is damaged or cracked, high-pressure water will flow out from the crack, meanwhile, the machine will automatically stop and relieve pressure to ensure the safety of equipment and personnel.
